~Did You Know?!~

http://news.thomasnet.com/IMT/archives/hiccups.jpg

DID YOU KNOW? !!: week of Sep
tember 22- 26

Have you ever been in the middle of a presentation in front of the whole class when all of the sudden you go to say something and all that comes out is an annoying hiccup that makes your whole body jump? To make things worse you get a drink of water and try to make them go away, but they just keep bouncing in your chest, driving you crazy. Where did they even come from in the first place?

Well, this is the story. Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, the muscle that controls our breathing, becomes irritated and starts to spasm and contract uncontrollably. With each contraction, air is pulled into the lungs very quickly, passes through the voice box, and then the epiglottis closes behind the rush of air, shaking the vocal chords, causing the "hic" sound. The hiccups can be caused by rapid eating, emotional stress and even some diseases.

What’s the best quick cure? Breathing into a paper bag. This calms the diaphragm by increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. Other ways to get rid of them: Take ten big gulps of water with no breaths in
between, eat a teaspoon of sugar, or hold your breath! Then finish that tough presentation!

Horoscopes

Aries: March 21-April 19

Don’t focus on the past or dwell on the things that you have done wrong, this will only delay progress. Set goals on what you want to do then go after them.

Taurus: April 20-May 20
Set positive goals, and pursue after the things you want. Assimilating information and experience, learning lessons and putting them into practice is the focus for you now.

Gemini: May 21-June 21

New ideas for all sorts of things pop into your head this week. A casual conversation with someone, perhaps while riding into school, may give you some insight you have been looking for to help you in the classroom.

Cancer: June 22-July 22

Make sure you focus on the small things that people do for you, because you never know how much they are trying to help you. Every once in a while thank them for what they have done for you.

Leo: July 23-August 22
It is critical that you are aggressive at this time, when you want something you need to go after it and have a disire. Be confident and don’t let fear or laziness keep you from achieving your goals.

Virgo: August 23-September 22
Being willing to take advice from others will help you out through this day, sometimes pride will blind your decision making. Make sure to stay calm and patiently deal with what life throws at you.

Libra: September 23-October 22

During this day you are energized and excited and are willing to take on whatever the day brings you. Make sure to call a friend that you haven’t talked to in a while because they are thinking of you.

Scorpio: October 23-November 21

Try to be nice to those around you especially to the ones that seem to be having a bad day. You never know what they could be going through or which one of you will have the upper hand in the future.

Sagittarius: November 22-December 21
You need to focus on the task at hand, many distractions will come your way and will take you away from your goals. Watch yourself and make sure that you aren’t being lazy or afraid because this too will keep you from accomplishing what you need to do.

Capricorn: December 22- January 19

Today you will have to be very patient because many trials and complications will come your way, it will seem as if some one is out there to get you. If you are patient and willing to deal with it than you will have a great reward.

Aquarius: January 20-February 18

Stay away from people with bad attitudes because those bad vibes will rub off onto you. Don’t whine or complain, work hard and just do the job the best you can.

Pisces: February 19-March 20

During this week don’t worry about what you can’t change, just let it be. Look past the negatives of your day and focus on the positives, just be happy.

Speech and Debate

If you hear someone talking at school about the NFL, don’t assume that they are talking about football. NFL can also stand for the National Forensics League, sometimes referred to as Speech and Debate.

So what is Speech? Speech and Debate is an academic sport that is devoted to teaching students skills that will be helpful in life. Different areas of competition include: Student Congress, Drama, Duet, Humor, Extemporaneous speaking, and many more. Whether you’re an academic or an actor, there is always an event that you might enjoy.

The coaches for this team are Mrs. Russel and Mr. Davis. They are a lot of fun and they are very committed to helping you succeed. Mrs. Russel is the drama coach, Mr. Davis is the Speaking coach, and they are currently looking for a new debate coach.

Speech and Debate is a lot of fun and it will soon be starting. The first official meeting is Monday the 15th after school in room 224. If you miss the first meeting, that’s okay. The team meets on a weekly basis, and it’s never too late to join. Speech is a great way to prepare yourself for life, and it is a good way to have fun.

Test Stress

NO! Not another test! I do not have any time to study for this. I have about a million other things to do. I have to go to work do my other homework. I do not have enough time to do all this!

Have you ever had the trouble of finding time to study for all the tests you have? It always seems that when the teacher says, "Alright class we have a test on Friday so study your notes", that same day you other classes give you about two hours of homework to do also. On top of that too you have to go to work and find time to still have a social life.

Everyday you get out of school at 3:05 and you go home. You get home about 3:30 depending on how far away you live. Then you have to hurry, change, and be to work by 4:00. You usually work until about 7:00 or 8:00, and when you get home you finally get to do your homework. You work on it until you are too tired to work on it any more, and then you fall asleep. This happens all week long, and when Friday morning finally comes you wake up, you get ready, you go to school, and you realize you forgot to study for your test. Now your freaking out because you know that since you didn't study you are going to fail. Your hoping at that very second that you'll either get sick or something will happen to the school where everyone has to go home(If only that would really happen).

You get into class and your teacher gives you five minutes to go over your test. You use your time wisely and you speed read over every note you have. Your teacher hands your test and you freak out cause you don't know one answer to this test. A week later you get your test back and you failed or, once again, you barely passed.

Here is an easy solution to all your problems. After you find out you have a test, you take your notes, fold them up, and put them in your back pocket. Every time you have a free chance take your notes and read over them and work on memorizing them. While your doing your homework and you are sick of working on a paper take a break and read over your notes for your test. It will help you to have a break from your other home work.

When your test comes around, you can use those five minutes to look over the things you really didn't understand. Then when you do get the test you wont freak out and you'll take the test with some confidence. When you get your test back, you will see some major improvements on your grade.

Freshmen initiation: Its a tradition

Freshmen initiation is more then what most people think of it. It has been an EHS tradition for many years, and will remain a tradition for many more years to come. It can be defined in a couple different ways. If you were to look up initiation in the dictionary the definition you would get would be, to admit or accept with formal rights into an organization or group, secret knowledge, adult society etc. The school’s definition of initiation is the seniors accepting the freshmen into the school in embarrassing and torturous ways.
After interviews with many different freshmen I found that most of them have the same view as far as initiation. A lot of them claim that they aren’t nervous. Is this true or are they trying to put on a show. Lets take a look at what some of the freshmen had to say:
“I don’t know any upper classmen so I don’t care about initiation.” –Austin Nolan
“Initiation is awesome. I’m not nervous at all.” –Sean Hysell
“It’s not a big deal. I just want to know what their going to do” –Ethan Dumbar
“I like the idea and I’m not nervous. If it happens it happens.” –Alex Nizbit
“It’s ok as long as it’s not me” –Tiffany Barker
A little advice to the freshmen: Initiation is a tradition at EHS so nervous or not just accept it and get through it. After all it is only one week of school out of the 4 years that you are here. Also you will have your chance to do the initiations once you become a senior. So good luck to all freshmen September 29 – October 3.

Meet EHS Freshmans 2008-2009

Why does everyone hate to be a freshman? Why is it so scary?. Many kids ask those same questions. Does it really suck being a freshman, or is that just a myth?
I had the pleasure to meet two great people this week. They are both freshmen maybe people in higher grades should realize that they're not just freshmen or little kids they are people like you and me. Even if people deny it we all have been freshmen once in our life and we didn´t like to be treated bad. That's why we should appreciate them more and get to know them.

EHS History

As I was cleaning a room for my current high school teacher Mr. Dalton, I came across something very interesting. I would have never guessed something would ever cross my path, but they did. Pictures. Fortunately, they aren’t just any kind of pictures. Some of them are even before our grandparents’ time, and others during our parents’ high school experiences. It was truly astounding to me, so I ask permission to keep and research the pictures for further details on them. I was given an “OK”, so I went and picked up about as much information on the pictures as I possibly could.

Pottery Club

When you think of Pottery Club you think of clay, pots, and sculptures. You probably also think of hard work and stress to make the perfect project.
What really happens is they help the people of Evanston and raise money to help other communities. Their main goal is to help others whose communities are in poor condition.
Why you ask is it called Pottery Club? They call it Pottery Club because the Pottery teacher Mrs. Hollows is the Queen of it all. Her second in command (president) is Darien Short. Third in command is Samantha Arnett (vice president). The one that loves and keeps track of the money is Colton Gomez (treasurer). The one that keeps them in line and makes sure everything is on time (the secretary) is her daughter Candice Hallows.
The club meets every Tuesday after school in the Pottery room where they plan their exciting activities. They present to us the startling Halloween Haunted House every year.
When I spoke to one of the members of the club Kaitlyn Lowry she said, “My favorite part is the social atmosphere.”I also asked her why she joined? She said, “ I heard about it from one of my friends and I thought it sounded cool.”
Right now the club is working on saving enough money to go over to New Orleans in order to help clean up the messes from hurricanes.
Also If anyone would like to join the Pottery Club you can join at any time during the year.
